Exclusive: Burnham-On-Sea’s longest-running club to close this month

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s longest-running club is set to close down after a history dating back over 100 years, we can reveal.

The Burnham Institute in Regent Street is to permanently shut at the end of this month due to a lack of funds.

The club’s bosses, pictured, have taken the “difficult decision” to avoid their financial problems worsening.

Club Chairman Robin Hewlett told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s been an incredibly difficult decision, but regrettably we just cannot afford to stay open any longer.”

“We have over 350 members, but they pay a very small membership fee which doesn’t support the bnusiness as a whole.”

“Furthermore, the money coming in from bar income, the gambling machines and special events isn’t enough to keep things going.”

“The club will therefore close for the final time on August 29th.”

The closure marks the end of a long and colourful history for the club, which originally opened in 1892.

“It’s a very sad time for us and many members are bitterly disappointed,” added Mr Hewlett.
