A man has been left with life-threatening injuries following a serious, two vehicle accident which caused the closure of the A38 near Burnham-On-Sea for six hours on Sunday night (August 16th).
Emergency services rushed to the A38 Huntspill Road at 10.30pm after a Ford Mondeo taxi heading towards Bridgwater collided into a Volkswagen Golf travelling in the opposition direction towards Highbridge.
Four fire crews from Bridgwater and Burnham, plus three ambulances, and numerous police teams were called to the scene, as pictured, and three people were taken to hospital for treatment.
Cutting equipment was used by the firefighters to remove the roof of the Golf and gain access to a seriously injured man inside, who was taken to Weston General Hospital.
“He suffered serious, life-threatening injuries including head, chest and leg injuries,” police spokesman Simon Whitby told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
The driver of the taxi was also taken to hospital for treatment, although his injuries were believed to be less serious. A passenger inside the Golf was also unhurt.
A fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Two fire engines from Burnham were sent, as well as a rescue vehicle and another fire engine from Weston.”
“On arrival, the crews confirmed one male casualty was heavily trapped and set about releasing him using multiple hydraulic cutting equipment.”
The road was closed from 10.30pm through to 4.30am this morning, Monday August 17th.
Police also praised nearby residents for their assistance during the aftermath of the accident.
