Town councillors have this week given the go-ahead to CCTV cameras being introduced on Burnham-On-Sea seafront to tackle anti-social behaviour and speeding.
Members of the council’s Policy and Finance Committee voted in favour of the scheme at a meeting on Wednesday night (August 19th).
It comes after Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last week that Burnham Holiday Village had agreed to give £10,000 towards the purchase and installation of the cameras on the South Esplanade. A further £10,000 is coming from the Somerset Crime and Disorder Partnership.
Town Councillors voted unanimously on Wednesday to give £2,000 from the council’s financial reserves to the project.
“We’ve got financial backing from the Holiday Village and the Crime and Disorder Partnership, so I don’t know how we could decide anything other than to approve the project,” Cllr Chris Williams said at the meeting.
It was proposed by Cllr Eric Gill and seconded by Cllr Williams that the scheme proceed.
Once installed, the cameras on the South Esplanade (pictured) will be monitored 24 hours a day by Sedgemoor District Council’s camera monitoring team.
