A major project to turn the derelict Highbridge Hotel into a £1.8million YMCA development is finally set to become a reality after contracts were exchanged with the site’s builders.
The new development will see the hotel transformed into 22 affordable flats for young people, as well as new sports facilities for the community and a YMCA hub.
The YMCA says the Work is set to begin on the project by the end of January, despite a series of delays holding up the start.
The organisation’s Somerset chief executive, Martin Hodgson, right, told Burnham-On-Sea.com before Christmas that the YMCA had awarded contracts for the build to Mi-Space, which is part of Midas.
This week, he said the building work is due to begin before the end of the month and that the project is on track to be completed in the autumn of 2016.
The Highbridge Hotel has been derelict for over six year since a huge blaze destroyed much of it in April 2008 followed by several other smaller blazes. Negotiations about its future have been ongoing ever since.
