After hail storm, Met Office warns of gales and heavy rain for Burnham

-

Burnham-On-Sea woke up to a covering of hail this morning (Wednesday) as the Met Office issued a new warning of heavy rain and gales.

Pedestrians and motorists were advised by police to take extra care after local streets turned white at around 7.45am.

Forecasters are predicting strong winds and heavy rain will hit the area from this afternoon.

“Gales or severe gales are expected to develop. Gusts of 50-65 mph are likely quite widely through the warning area, whilst gusts of 75 mph are likely around southern and western coasts and over exposed hills,” says the Met Office.

“This system has the potential to produce 20-40 mm of rainfall quite widely in the warning area, with as much as 50-60 mm over higher ground in the west. These rainfall amounts are likely to lead to standing water and also the risk of localised flooding.”

The Met Office advises that the public should be aware of the risk of possible disruption to transport and possibly power supplies.

It comes after a warning for snow on Tuesday failed to materialise in the Burnham area with only sleet and hail showers being seen.
