Weather experts have confirmed that a funnel cloud was spotted over Stert Island, near Burnham-On-Sea, on Thursday afternoon (July 5th).

Several residents and motorists in the Huntspill area reported seeing the cloud forming at 2.25pm, as pictured here.

Alison Jacobs took these photos of the cloud and said it was an impressive sight.

“It was clearly visible in the sky for around three minutes,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Motorist Dave Cushion also saw the formation as he travelled along the A38 through West Huntspill. “It was moving in a westerly direction towards the sea,” he said.

Funnel clouds are rarely-seen formations of condensed water droplets associated with a rotating column of wind and extending from the base of a cloud but not reaching the ground or a water surface. If they touch the ground, they become classed as a tornado.

BBC weather forecaster Ian Ferguson confirmed that a funnel cloud had been spotted during his bulletin on Point’s West.

The sighting comes as the Met Office issued a yellow warning for the next 24 hours as a band of heavy rain moves across the region.
