Burnham-On-Sea air cadets earn first aid qualifications

-

A group of air cadets from Burnham-On-Sea’s 290 Squadron have achieved a first aid qualification following an intensive course.

The ten cadets – who included four newcomers aged 13-15 – gained a St John accredited first aid qualification after being tutored in 25 subjects ranging from severe bleeding and performing CPR to coping in emergencies and dealing with chest pain.

During the 12 hour course designed to teach teenagers basic life saving skills, they took part in theoretical and practical scenarios.

They were then assessed on dealing with conscious and unconscious casualties followed by a practical CPR assessment using a training aid called Resuscitation Annie.

The cadets now join the other 30 cadets at the group which have passed during the past year.

The group meets every Thursday evening at 7.30pm and provides a wide range of activities, varying from adventure and leadership training, to gliding. Those interested in joining should visit the unit, located in Highbridge Road (opposite the entrance to the Sea Cadets access road in Cassis Close) or call Flying Officer Chris Garrett on 07980 729980 or Jeff Jackson on 01278 781649.
