Burnham and Berrow Golf Club has this week issued an apology to a dog walker who says she narrowly avoided being struck by a golf ball while using a footpath across the course.
Angie Dibble is keen to warn other dog owners about the dangers of crossing the course at Berrow, pictured right, following her close encounter last Thursday.
She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I would like to warn others about the dangers of using the course footpath whenever golfers are playing. At around 7pm on Thursday I was walking the footpath towards Berrow from the beach.”
“There was a group of golfers playing on my right, so I waited for them to take their shots. I stood in a spot where I was visible, but out of their line of fire.”
“I waited for quite some time and when it appeared that they had finished I took a step forward and a golf ball then landed no less than a foot in front of me.”
“They must have been able to see me quite clearly and that I had been waiting to cross, but no-one shouted for me to stop or wait.”
“I urge dog walkers to be careful here – a hit to the head from a golf ball could cause brain injury, loss of teeth, an eye or even your life.”
Angie says the club’s manager has since been in touch to apologise for the incident on behalf of the golfers.
“He also said would send out an email to all members to heed the rules and remind them that walkers have the right of way here, and golfers must stop play to let people cross the footpath safely.”
