Van driver jailed for four months after failing to stop at Highbridge crash

-

A man has been arrested and jailed for four months after failing to stop at the scene of this accident on the A38 at Highbridge on Saturday evening (September 5th).

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported on Saturday that police had been called to the junction of Alstone Road and the A38 Huntspill Road after a two-vehicle collision, pictured here.

A white Ford Transit van collided with a black Volkswagen Golf, however the van driver did not stop at the scene.

Police spokesman Steve Game told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The driver of the transit van, a 54-year-old Bristol man, was later arrested outside the Royal Artillery pub nearby.”

“He was taken to Bridgwater police station and charged with disqualified driving, failing to stop, having no insurance and no MOT.”

The man, Stephen Coombs, 54, of Terrell Gardens in Bristol appeared at Sedgemoor Magistrates Court on Monday (September 7th).

He pleaded guilty to the charges and was handed a 16-week prison term.

The accident comes less than three weeks after a serious collision between two vehicles just a few metres away towards Highbridge.

Twenty year-old Jon Puddy suffered multiple injuries in the crash on Sunday August 16th and later died.

Some local residents say additional safety measures are needed to make the road safer – as reported here.
