A wildlife rescue centre near Burnham-On-Sea has been hit by a food shortage following an influx of animals caused by wet summer weather.
Secret World in East Huntspill says it has been inundated with orphans and casualties in recent weeks.
Supplies of tinned cat food, dog food and kitten food have been depleted and the centre has this week appealed to pet food suppliers and the public for help.
Charity founder Pauline Kidner told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The wet weather has meant we are almost running out of room for all the casualties that have come into our care.”
“Some of these animals will remain with us for a few weeks until they are fit and ready to be returned back into the wild.”
“This has been a huge drain on our resources and we are hoping people will help us feed these casualties.”
Donations of tinned cat food, kitten food and dog food are being gratefully appreciated and can be delivered directly to the rescue centre in East Huntspill or by calling them on 01278 783250.
Secret World has seen a 52 per cent increase in the number of animals they rescue over the past five years, according to new figures released this week. A large number of the animals rescued last year were victims of road traffic accidents, pollution and pesticides.
Pauline said: “Threat to habitat is one of the single biggest risks to wildlife. The more we develop, the more we humans encroach upon their world.”
