Burnham-On-Sea town centre upgrade ‘will be complete by Easter’

-

Thousands of pounds worth of improvements to Burnham-On-Sea town street are underway this week – and traders have been assured that the work will be completed before Easter.

Work to upgrade and repaint the existing lighting columns by SSE Contracting along the High Street has started this week, as pictured on Thursday. New brighter lights are also being introduced.

The installation of new cast iron columns in Victoria Street to replace the existing galvanised steel columns is also due to start over the next week.

Paul Martin, who is project managing the street works, also gave a fuller update this week in a report to the Chamber of Trade about the rest of the work.

“The delivery of the street furniture has been delayed by three weeks, resulting in the delay of resurfacing works of the pavements in the new ‘events area’ between Cross Street and Adam Street,” he confirmed.

“The resurfacing will result in the closure of some sections, but I have been assured that access to shops will be maintained. The road will remain open.”

“The resurfacing of the highway will be carried out in March as higher temperatures are required for the curing of the coloured tarmac.”

He added: “Some minor street works have already been completed such as the installation of a new feeder pillar in the events area that provides an electricity supply for events.”

“Concrete bases have been constructed for new planters and the installation of these and other items of street furniture such as hanging baskets, finger posts, cycle stands and display cabinets will commence next week.”

He assured traders that the work will be completed before the Easter holidays.

The work aims to enhance the appearance of Burnham town centre to encourage more shoppers and visitors.

The changes are part of a combined work package amounting to £440,000 funded by Tesco to offset the expansion of its Burnham store, along with grants from the Town Council and former South West Regional Development Agency.
