Liberal Democrats pick County Council candidate for Burnham North

-

Liberal Democrats in Burnham-On-Sea have this week announced town councillor Helen Groves will be standing as a candidate during the county council elections next May.

Helen, pictured, has been selected as the Burnham North candidate against incumbent Conservative County Councillor Peter Burridge-Clayton.

Helen told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am delighted, though very humbled, to have been selected to stand for Burnham. I care deeply about the community in which I and my family live and I recognise in these difficult economic times our town faces many challenges.”

“I share residents’ concern for our High Street and services upon which we all depend and believe it is crucial that our business community, the very engine of our economy, is given the support it needs.”

Helen added: “I understand that politics should never be more important than the people of this town. As a town councillor I do all that’s possible to give my community a voice, but many of the concerns residents express to me are issues under the direct control of our County Council. Should I have the opportunity to represent you I promise I will take your concerns and your voices to County Hall.”

“During my time as a councillor I have heard many people allude to a Burnham – Highbridge divide. I do not believe such a divide exists within our communities, our interdependent economy, nor the cultural and social heritage of our towns.”

“I strongly believe in the current economic climate it is crucial to the survival of both towns that those relationships are built upon and as your representative I would strive to build those upon links for the benefit of all.”

Burnham’s Lib Dem MP Tessa Munt has expressed her support of Helen Groves, saying: “Helen isn’t a politician, she’s just a local woman who wants to get the very best for our area.”

“She lives here and knows the issues that concern you. I know Helen and she has the time, energy and enthusiasm to make a real difference for our area. She will be a first rate councillor who will always put representing you before party politics.”

Sedgemoor Liberal Democrat Leader Joe Leach, who is also a candidate for the County Council election in Highbridge and Burnham South, added: “I have never known a more passionate person in my time in local politics. Helen works hard for her community and it’s been a privilege to work with her so far. I hope to work alongside her at County Hall next year.”
