Residents oppose plans for new block of flats in Burnham-On-Sea

-

A group of Burnham-On-Sea residents who are opposing plans to build a two-storey block of flats next to their homes spoke out against the proposals at a town council meeting on Monday evening (September 14th).

The group is concerned about the scheme to build a two-storey extension consisting of four one bedroom flats at Brue House in Berrow Road.

Seven residents, led by Terry Owens, say the development would cause a long list of problems. “There would be a loss of privacy due to overlooking, a large increase in traffic along Players Lane, which is already in a poor condition, and the property itself would become overcrowded,” Mr Owens told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

The group attended Monday’s meeting of Burnham Town Council’s Planning Applications Committee, where the plans were given a ‘thumbs down’.

Cllr Chris Williams was among the councillors backing the residents. He said: “I’m completely against this application given the current poor state of Players Lane, and the fact that the proposed extension is completely out of character for this area of Burnham.”

Cllr Janet Keen agreed: “It would become a grossly congested site. The development would be greater in density than the Mulholland Park site in Highbridge and would exceed the government’s regulations.”

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton, who chaired Monday’s meeting, concluded: “This application for an extension is effectively a block of flats. I support the residents’ objections – the complaints are very valid.”

A vote was taken and the scheme was unanimously rejected by the council’s committee, who will therefore raise a formal objection to the plans.

The ultimate decision on whether the scheme proceeds now rests with Sedgemoor District Council’s planning department, who are expected to make a final decision later this year.

A similar planning application at the address was raised last year, when the district council rejected the scheme.
