An army bomb disposal team was called to Highbridge on Tuesday (September 22nd) after a gardener uncovered part of a wartime bomb shell.
Police were called to a property in Isleport Lane just before 11am when the resident found the metallic object, which turned out to be part of a wartime bomb shell, as pictured here.
Police called on the Royal Logistic Corps bomb disposal team to investigate amid concern that the object could still be live.
However, the army team arrived during the early part of the afternoon and declared it safe after a careful examination of the device.
Police spokesman Steve Game confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Police were called to Isleport Lane at 10.50am after a man digging in his garden found a shell.”
“The Ordnance Bomb Disposal team attended and, after some investigation, declared that it wasn’t live.”
In a separate incident last week, two wartime shells were also found at a children’s park at Highbridge’s Apex Park last Thursday. It turned out to be a false alarm as both shells were spent.
The latest incident comes after several bomb-related discoveries in the Burnham area. Earlier this month, Burnham-On-Sea.com reported how a resident in Berrow Road, Burnham had found a live wartime shell in her garden shed. It was later blown up on the town’s beach by the Royal Logistic Corps bomb disposal team.
There was also a bomb scare at Berrow in August when part of the beach was closed by Coastguards. The bomb disposal team was called to investigate, but the object was found to be harmless.
A huge wartime bomb was exploded on the mudflats near Stert Island in 2008 after being discovered by a fisherman. And an empty wartime bombshell was found in the sand dunes last September, causing part of Berrow beach to be shut for several hours.
