Four residents to receive Civic Awards in Burnham and Highbridge

-

Four residents from Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are set to be honoured for their service to the community with Civic Awards today (Sunday).

Mayor Cllr Bill Hancock announced the names of the four winners earlier this month ahead of the annual Burnham and Highbridge Civic Service on Sunday October 22nd.

Pat Burge, Colin and Eileen Rufus, and John Strickland are to receive the awards during the annual Civic Service to be held in St John’s Church.

The winners, chosen by the Town Council, were drawn up from a list of nominees submitted by members of the public earlier this year.

Pat Burge was nominated for her long involvement with Highbridge Community Hall, St John’s Church, Moose, Sea Cadets and as a former councillor for 16 years.

Colin and Eileen Rufus were nominated for their dedication and loyalty to Burnham-On-Sea Lions Club over many years plus fundraising, marshalling and involvement with Cub and Scout Groups and school supervisory work.

John Strickland was put forward as a mainstay of North Sedgemoor History Group, the Capture Burnham project, and the town’s history trail.

A further special mention will be given to a fifth person, the late Brian Saunders, pictured right, during the Civic Service.

He had been nominated for his outstanding involvement in the community at The Princess Theatre and other community groups, but sadly passed away recently as reported here.

Burnham and Highbridge’s Mayor, Cllr, Bill Hancock, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’m delighted with this year’s choices – we have chosen four people who have been an important part of community life in both the towns for many years.”

During the service on October 22nd the Mayor’s guest of honour, The Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset, Brigadier Tom Lang, will present the awards to the four.
