The organisers of this year’s Highbridge and Burnham-On-Sea Carnival have expressed concern that low-hanging tree branches along the route may affect the safety of carts at next Monday’s event (November 6th).
With a week to go until this year’s big parade, organisers are in ongoing talks with Burnham’s Tesco store to get the trees trimmed back. As pictured here, the trees overhang the pavements and side of the road in Love Lane and Ben Travers Way.
Paul Archer, Vice Chairman, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We do our very best to put on as safe an event as possible, and we do have some concerns about these low-hanging tree branches.”
“They could make it quite difficult for the larger carts to get safely around the roundabout without the branches touching the performers onboard or the carts or their moving parts.”
“The larger carts need a lot of turning room and these trees may slow down the procession if they are not cut back in time.”
Paul added: “It would be very much appreciated if Tesco would cut back these trees. We have been into the store several times during recent weeks to discuss the issue and we now have just a few days left before the carnival.”
“It won’t stop the carnival going ahead, but we would like the matter sorted out to avoid any concerns on the day.”
A spokeswoman for Burnham’s Tesco store told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Sunday that it is “aware of the issue” and that the store “plans to get it resolved before carnival night.”
This year’s 71st annual Highbridge and Burnham-On-Sea Carnival takes place at 7.30pm on Monday November 6th.

“Everything else is on track for a great event,” said carnival treasurer Jonathan Walter. “All the plans are coming together well.”
Dozens of colourful illuminated floats will light up the town, with more than 80 entries in the parade.
Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront fireworks will be held at 6.30pm on Sunday (November 5th).
Burnham-On-Sea carnival programmes are on sale, featuring full details of the entries that will be in the parade. The programme, costing £1.50, includes a list of the carnival floats taking part, plus road closures, the route and background information. This year’s programme is on sale at Burnham’s tourist information centre, plus GW Hurley newsagents, the Toycupboard and Gardiner-Whites.
