Hundreds of people attended Burnham-On-Sea’s Remembrance Day ceremony to honour those local people who have died in conflicts.
Burnham’s Royal British Legion organised Sunday’s ceremony, which was watched by a record turnout of residents besides the town’s War Memorial in Love Lane.
A parade took place beforehand along Burnham-On-Sea’s High Street, as shown here, featuring over 300 people of all ages from local community groups.
Led by the Mayor Cllr Bill Hancock, they marched from Burnham’s Pier Street car park through the town centre to the War Memorial.
The ceremony was led by Rev Ken Brown, Burnham Hospital Chaplain and Padre of the air cadet corps, and saw scores of dignitaries lay wreaths, including Burnham-On-Sea’s MP James Heappey.
Two minutes’ silence was held at exactly 11am followed by the playing of the Last Post by trumpeter Joe Storar.
The ceremony was held in bright and breezy conditions and finished with the crowds singing the National Anthem.
Mayor Bill Hancock told Burnham-On-Sea.com afterwards: “What a fantastic turnout – the town has done itself proud. I was especially pleased to see so many young people taking part. John and Ruth Crosby, the organisers, are to be congratulated for such a successful event.”
John Crosby, Vice Chairman at Burnham’s branch of the British Legion, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am so pleased with how it went after months of planning. There was great co-ordination from so many different people to make it a success. Thanks to every who came along, and also a special thank you to the carnival club for overseeing the road closures.”
