Child car seat safety checks for Burnham and Highbridge parents

-

Somerset Road Safety will hold a special event in Highbridge on Tuesday (September 4th) when parents will be able to get free advice on the selection and fitting of child car seats.

It comes after safety checks in the area have revealed that around two thirds of child seats are the wrong type or incorrectly fitted, potentially putting young lives at risk.

The free Highbridge event will be held from 10am-2pm on Tuesday in the car park of the town’s Asda supermarket.

“The event will be attended by experts who will also be able to answer questions and explain the child safety seat laws,” said spokeswoman Elizabeth Kulh.

“Selecting the correct child seat for the car and the age of the child, and ensuring it is fitted properly, is essential. Previous checks have shown that many seats are the wrong size, not compatible with the vehicle or are badly fitted.”

“Under the law, the driver is legally responsible for ensuring that children in the car are correctly restrained. The law requires all children travelling in cars use the correct child restraint until they are 12 years old or 135cm in height.”

Somerset Road Safety was formed in 2006 to bring together the extensive experience and expertise from a number of organisations to drive down casualty rates and create safer communities in Somerset.
