Sedgemoor District Council has this week defended its decision to spend almost £3,000 on installing gates around a small building on Burnham-On-Sea seafront.
Walkers have always been able to wander around the building to walk from the seafront to The Esplanade, but the council installed gates at the weekend that now block entry, as pictured here.
Claire Faun, spokeswoman for Sedgemoor District Council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have received several complaints about the steps being slippery.”
“As it is not a public thoroughfare, we thought it best for safety and security to block them off.”
She said the total cost of the work was £2,729+VAT.
The installation has sparked a debate on Burnham-On-Sea’s discussion forums here with readers unhappy about the changes.
“To me it seems like a complete waste of money and time,” says one user.
Another added: “What a complete waste of time, and money what on earth have they done this for? Next they will put gates on most of the access routes up to to sea front from the grass/road.”
