Council defends ‘confidential’ talks on future of Burnham’s BMX track

-

Sedgemoor District Council has this week defended its decision not to discuss in public its plans to sell off the BMX track at Highbridge’s Apex Park.

The council is set to discuss the proposals during a meeting of the council’s Executive today (Wednesday), however the item will be discussed in a ‘confidential’ session behind closed doors.

Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This has been consulted upon on three occasions with the Friends of Apex Park at open meetings.”

“The principle of the decision regarding the potential relocation of the BMX Track and the upgrading of the existing Ranger Building/Public conveniences is in the public domain.”

“The commercial confidentiality relates to the ‘terms and conditions’ of the negotiations.”

She added: “The purpose of the report is to get an agreement ‘in principle’ to support the concept so that both Bourne Leisure and Burnham BMX feel more confident in investing sums in the planning process which is the next stage of the process.”

“Clearly there will be further public consultation as part of the planning process and, as in all cases like this, we actively encourage the applicants to undertake public consultation events.”

Burnham BMX Club is understood to be considering a move to another local site where a new track would be constructed. The matter has been discussed on Burnham’s discussion forums here this week.
