A Burnham-On-Sea town councillor who campaigned for the removal of a rusting cash machine in the High Street has this week welcomed the news that it will not be replaced by owners BT and Cashzone after it was recently severely damaged in a robbery.
This week, Cllr Nick Tolley, who led a campaign earlier this year to get the “eyesore” removed, has welcomed the news.
BT and Cashzone have decided that the cash machine at the corner of the High Street and Adam Street will not be replaced with a new one. It’s has been boarded up since being deliberately attacked on November 14th to steal cash.
Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, he said: “I am delighted at that news. It had little use and was an eyesore. I can only assume that they looked at the financial viability of the phone and realised that it was not needed by the public.”
“It would be a benefit, however, to have an ATM cash machine at the southern end of the town that is free to use like the other cash machines in our two towns.”
“But I must add that I am sorry that another facility is being lost from the High Street. Maybe a pillar style information piece such as the one at the cafe opposite the RNLI would look nice?”
“We used to have a full-time flower stall by the Somerset and Dorset pub. So maybe there would be space there for another colourful and professional full time street trader?”
A joint statement from Cashzone and BT said: “At the moment, there are no plans to install a new machine in the same location. We secured the damaged equipment and made it safe immediately after the attack. We can confirm that the remaining parts of the damaged ATM will be removed in the very near future.”
