Exclusive: Flood-hit residents in Burnham-On-Sea street call for action

-

Concerned residents have called for action after this street in Burnham-On-Sea was left under five inches of water on Wednesday (November 25th) when a blocked ditch on a nearby holiday park caused drains to be overwhelmed.

Residents of Sycamore Close have held talks with the County Council’s Highways Department to try and get the problem resolved after two days of problems.

However, the council believes the flooding is being caused by a ditch on the site of the nearby Burnham Holiday Village and it is pressing the park for action.

Resident John Groves, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Each time we’ve had heavy rainfall in recent days the street has been inundated with water. The drains just can’t take it away.”

“It is a worry and we wonder how much water will collect next time there’s another storm.”

“A member of the County Council’s Highways Department visited us this week, but said there is little they can do. We all believe that a blocked ditch in the Holiday Village is to blame.”

Burnham Holiday Village’s General Manager, Graham Plant, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are investigating the matter but are not fully sure why the problem is occurring.”

“The water seems to be coming from a ditch and my team are trying to be as helpful as possible by trying to resolve it. We also want to put a long-term solution in place.”

And Somerset County Council spokeswoman Jan Hookings confirmed that discussions are being held to get the problems resolved.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “An officer from the highways department has visited Sycamore Close this week. There is a problem with the outfall into a nearby ditch. The ditch, not in the ownership of the County Council, is blocked and we are in discussions to try and get this resolved.”
