First look at proposed Burnham-On-Sea beachfront flats scheme

-

New plans for a controversial block of 13 beachfront flats in Burnham-On-Sea have been submitted to the district council.

The proposed building, pictured above, is next to the beach in Allendale Road and is different to the original scheme which caused uproar last year – however nearby residents are still opposed to the plans.

The developers, Moose Roper Limited, have addressed some of the concerns of local residents, councillors and the Planning Inspectorate by drawing up plans for a two-storey property that is slightly lower than the originally proposed three-storey building.

It also has a Victorian appearance, replacing the stark, modern look of before. The planned building would replace the existing property, pictured right.

But residents in the area are unhappy about its proposed size and say it would spoil the area.

Tom Ashton, spokesman for the Allendale Road residents, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There is a lot of concern here about the new scheme. The proposed property might look different, but it’s just as big and out-of-place as the previous one.”

Last November, residents won their bid to get the first planning application thrown out by the Planning Inspectorate. They were up in arms over plans to build a three-storey block of 14 flats on the site.

This time, however, Moose Roper has been in regular dialogue with residents in the run-up to the application being submitted with Sedgemoor District Council.

Feedback on the scheme is being welcomed by the council until Christmas, after which time its officers will assess the scheme.
