A popular Burnham-On-Sea District Nurse is retiring after forty six years’ service in the NHS.
Carol Mutlow, pictured, has been a District Nurse for much of her nursing career, providing care to patients across Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge.
In her earlier Burnham days she was also a Midwife and she has been leading a team of District Nurses serving the local community.
Carol said: “So much has changed in so many ways since I’ve started nursing. Some good, others not so, though the reward of making a difference to people’s lives when they have needed our help will always be a memory I will cherish along with that of my loyal and dedicated team.”
Carol started her nursing career at Dorchester County Hospital in 1969 as a student nurse before working at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Bournemouth and then six years at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and The Nuffield Hospital in Taunton. She completed her midwifery training at Musgrove Park Hospital.
She worked as a night sister at East Reach Hospital Taunton, after which in 1980 she went on to be a District Nurse and Midwife in Burnham, later concentrating wholly on her District Nursing to which she has led one of the local teams for many years and from which she now retires.
Her daughter Becky told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “You can’t walk down Burnham high street without someone recognising Mum.”
“She’s cared for so many people and delivered so many babies – most of whom have their own children now.”
Carol’s last day in her role will be Monday 27th April, after which she says she’s looking forward to spending more time in her garden. Beekeeping is on the cards, as well as country walks with her husband and dogs.
