A motorist was rescued after getting stuck on Brean beach on Saturday (September 29th) while attempting to drive across the mudflats to reach the sea.
Brean’s beachwarden raised the alarm just after mid-day when the stranded silver Mitsubishi Shogun, pictured here, was spotted half a mile out from the beach.
Volunteers from BARB (Burnham Area Rescue Boat) were called to the scene and a tractor was used to haul the vehicle and its grateful owner to safety.
The driver, Martin Buckland from Bloxwich in the West Midlands, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “With my 4×4, I thought I could drive down to the sea, but my wheels sank into the mud just as I was about to turn round.”
“I was very grateful for the help of the rescue crew. I’m embarrassed that it happened.”
Mr Buckland made a substantial donation to BARB to cover its expenses.
A BARB spokesman said: “This incident serves as a fresh reminder about the dangers of venturing into the mud along Brean beach. Our advice is to heed the warning signs and stay on the hard sand at the top of the beach.”
