Burnham-On-Sea’s Marine Cove Gardens will host a free-to-attend May Day celebration today (Bank Holiday Monday).
The usually peaceful gardens on Burnham’s seafront will be alive with activity, including a fairy hunt with prizes.
The event will take place between 12 noon and 3pm and will also feature dancing, plus arts and craft activities for all the family.
This year’s event, as in previous years, will be opened by the children of St Joseph’s School in Burnham who will perform their Maypole dance routine.
Floral wands produced by the Burnham Ladies Evening Flower group will also be available before the Maypole dancing.
Alongside the traditional May Day activities local children are being invited to take part in a poetry competition and bring their entries along to the event.
A winner in each age category (under 5, 6-11 and 12 and over) will be chosen the week after the event and awarded a prize.
A gardening session is also being held in the gardens on Saturday 2nd May from 10am until mid-day when volunteers are welcome to join in with a range of general gardening tasks which range from weeding and planting to sanding the benches.
A further event will take place on Thursday 21st May when the garden will be open for visitors to complete seed sowing between 10am and 2pm. Visitors can also drop-in to find out more about joining the Friends of Marine Cove group.
A Sedgemoor spokeswoman said: “We have a busy month in May and look forward to seeing lots of new and return visitors at the May Day event as well as our two gardening-focused sessions. It is always exciting to see the gardens being well used by people of all ages and encouraging a real sense of community spirit.”
