Tributes paid to West Huntspill ‘autism support champion’ who has died

-

Tributes have been paid to a community-spirited resident in West Huntspill who championed autism support.

Campbell Main, pictured, passed away peacefully at home on January 2nd, aged 85.

Allison Ward from Autism Somerset, who has led the tributes, said: “It is with heavy hearts that we give you the sad news that Campbell has passed away.”

“Campbell was a truly remarkable man who was well known to many of us as a champion of ‘our people’ as he liked to call our children and other loved ones on the Autistic Spectrum.”

“With the heart of a lion, he took on the cause for rights and support for people with autism and galvanised us, their families and carers, to fight alongside him.”

“He was knowledgeable and courageous, making himself known to all and sundry, undaunted by titles or hierarchy. Campbell made sure to always be where his views mattered: he knew his beliefs and stood by them.”

“He was the king of networking and sign-posting: if you needed something, Campbell knew who you should talk to, and where you should find it.”

“That wasn’t all of Campbell. He was a warm and personable human being, with a background in farming that gave him a love of the countryside. He was a family man and spokeproudly of his grandchildren. It has been an honour to know him and he will be sorely missed: a gentleman and a warrior.”

A celebration of his life will be held at The Parish Church of St Peter and All Hallows, West Huntspill on Monday January 15th at 12.30pm. Family flowers only, but donations if desired – for Motivation & St Peter and All Hallows Roof Fund – may be sent to Ashley Edwards Funeral Directors, 10 Church Street, Highbridge, TA9 3AF.
