Walkers using the England Coast Path between Burnham-On-Sea and Watchet are being advised that a section of the path has been closed by a landslip.
Last week’s stormy weather caused a section of cliff at St Audrie’s Bay to fall away.
Somerset County Council says it’s working with landowners and in liaison with Natural England to agree a new route as soon as possible.
In the meantime, there is an inland alternative available by following other footpaths and part of the West Somerset Coast Path between Doniford and East Quantoxhead.
Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Rights of Way, said: “Our coast path is a fantastic asset which is enjoyed by thousands of local people and tourists every year.”
“Landslips do happen and this decision to close the path has not been taken lightly. Please be assured we’re working hard to find an alternative route as soon as possible.”
Along the same route there is a winter diversion at Steart Point to protect sensitive wildlife, and a diversion is in force near Hinkley Point until 2019 to allow ‘land management operations’ to take place. More details here.
