Five cars seized and four drug arrests made in Highbridge crackdown

-

Highbridge police have seized five cars and made four arrests in their continuing fight against drug dealing and anti-social use of motor vehicles in the town.

The figures were revealed by Sgt Ian Kennett of Burnham Police at the latest Highbridge PACT (Police and Communities Together) meeting.

He said that since last October police had issued two warnings under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002, and seized the five vehicles under Section 59 or for driving without insurance.

Sgt Kennett also told the meeting that 35 vehicles had been given a direction to leave under the new dispersal zones set up in Burnham and Highbridge – a scheme that has proved successful in reducing anti-social use of motor vehicles.

He also confirmed that a number of arrests had been made following thefts of motor cycles, cars and mobility scooters.

The second set of progress was in relation to the fight against drug dealing in the town, which has been a consistent PACT priority in Highbridge.

Sgt Kennett told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Over the last year, the workload in relation to drug related activities has decreased, largely due to the successes of previous drug seizures.”

“More recently, four separate arrests have been made for possession of Class C drugs, and intelligence received by the police is that cannabis is now very difficult to buy in Highbridge.”

The meeting was then opened to the floor to discuss local issues and concerns. The next set of priorities were agreed, which led to both drug misuse and parking issues being the top two. The police beat team will report back with an update at the next Highbridge PACT meeting on 15th April at 7.30pm in St Johns Hall, Bank Street.

The meeting was attended by 18 members of public, as well as Anna Midgley from Homes in Sedgemoor, Reg Winslow from Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset County Councillor John Woodman and local police.

Burnham-On-Sea’s PACT meeting will be held on 4th February at 7.30pm at The Old Courthouse in Jaycroft Road.
