Residents have hit out at late night revellers who are repeatedly leaving scores of empty alcohol bottles strewn over the sand dunes in Burnham-On-Sea during weekend beach parties.
Over 100 beer cans and bottles were left discarded on the sands north of the town’s beach lighthouse on Saturday night (May 16th), as pictured, after the latest in a series of such events.
Burnham-On-Sea Police and Sedgemoor District Council have been alerted by local residents to the growing problem.
Kelly Pople told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Every Friday or Saturday night when the weather’s nice, there is a large group that gathers for parties. They seem to think it’s fine to leave their bottles, cans and rubbish for others to find and clear away.”
“Several beach users and myself regularly clear away smashed glass and bottles, which are a danger to children and pets and are certainly not welcoming to visitors.”
She added: “Since last summer there have been regular gatherings here and they seem to be becoming more frequent. Something needs to happen – it’s frustrating when we’ve informed the police but nothing is done.”
“I don’t mind picking up occasional rubbish washed up along the beach, but it can take several days to clear the dunes after these parties. There are even gas canisters and disposable barbecues left there too.”
