A short service took place next to Highbridge’s Frank Foley Statue in Market Street on Saturday to commemorate World Holocaust Day.
Highbridge War Memorial Trust organised the service, which was led by Rev Sharon Crossman and Rev Graham Witts.
Despite wet weather, flowers and candles were laid at the statue in Market Street by residents, who included Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Mayor Cllr Bill Hancock and Mayoress Frances Hancock plus Sedgemoor District Council Chairman Cllr Mike Cresswell.
Highbridge-born Frank Foley was employed as a Passport Control Officer in Berlin from 1920 until 1939.
In his role, he was able to help hundreds of Jews escape from Nazi Germany before the outbreak of World War Two.
He had no diplomatic immunity and put himself at great risk by helping to save the lives of 10,000 Jews.
Saturday’s ceremony in Highbridge included ‘El Male Rachamim’, a Jewish prayer for the departed, which has been adopted as the memorial prayer for the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution.
