Burnham Police issue warning over £825,000 lottery scam letters

-

Residents in the Burnham-On-Sea area have this week been warned to beware of scam letters being delivered by post from what appears to be the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The alert has been issued by Burnham Police after a local resident received a letter stating she’d won £825,000.

To claim her prize, she was asked to telephone a number and pay a large processing fee.

The letter stated that the winning ticket was drawn as part of the People’s Postcode Lottery’s international programme held in Spain.

“This correspondence is highly likely to be a scam and we’d advise residents be on the look out for further letters,” a Burnham Police spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“If anyone receives a letter, they should contact the County Council’s trading standards service, Burnham Police or just destroy it.”

The real People’s Postcode Lottery says it will never under any circumstances request a payment to receive any prize.

A spokesman added: “People’s Postcode Lottery takes such matters very seriously and urge the public to be vigilant and look out for key warning signs in any communication telling them they have won any lottery. You cannot win a lottery unless you have entered. Legitimate lotteries don’t ask you to pay taxes, custom fees, insurance shipping or handling or any other fee before receiving your ‘winnings’.”
