Burnham-On-Sea cyclists raise huge £25,000 during ride across India

-

Eight Burnham-On-Sea ladies have completed an incredible cycle ride across India, raising a mammoth £25,000 for charity.

Pauline West, Caroline Heyes, Carol Keen, Jane Lewis, Trish Walker, Alison Harding, Mandy Gaylard and Jackie Wheelaghan have this week returned to the UK after raising the huge sum for Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.

Mandy told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the group completed the cycle ride with no problems and only a couple of punctures between them.

“It was an amazing experience and very humbling. We cycled in very rural areas and to the villagers it was like the carnival had come to their village,” she said.

“They were out cheering us and waving. Last Tuesday was Diwali, India Christmas and New Year, so their spirits were high and everyone was shouting ‘Happy Diwali’. They are very poor people but seem very happy.”

“It was a challenge – not only the cycling, which was mainly off road, sand dunes, gravel tracks not to mention the pot holes – but also having no home comforts.”

“Things we take for granted such as running water and flushing toilets were missing but we would all do it all again.”

Those who would like to sponsor the group can still do so by clicking here.
