Burnham church unveils huge labyrinth to celebrate its 700th year

-

A huge knitted labyrinth has been unveiled in the grounds of Burnham-On-Sea’s St Andrew’s Church this week as part of its 700th anniversary celebrations.

The church appealed for contributions of multi-coloured yarn last month, and these have now been joined together to create the labyrinth in the church grounds, pictured here.

Around 30 people gathered on Sunday afternoon (June 14th) to put the finishing touches to the design, which will be on show for two months.

The original idea was to create a labyrinth out of stones but this changed to a yarn one instead with contributions coming from as far afield as Birmingham and Scarborough from people who read about the idea on Burnham-On-Sea.com here.

Local members of the community and church met to make the labyrinth, which was the idea of St Andrew’s Curate, Rev Sharon Eldergill, and assisted by Jacqui Strong, the community gardener at Burnham’s Marine Cove.

Labyrinths have a long history and are a way of meditating on life as you wend your way around the lines of the structure before reaching the middle.

Rev Eldergill told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We had the idea to create a labyrinth to offer the community in the 700th year of our founding, and to remind people of the journey of life and faith. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the making of the labyrinth, from those who contributed their knitting to Jacqui who masterminded the practical details of our afternoon.”

She added that the labyrinth will be in place for two months and it’s hoped in the autumn to plant bulbs in the shape of the labyrinth so that next spring there will be a lasting community asset.
