Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called out on Saturday evening (February 24th) following a report of a person potentially stuck in mud.
Coastguard had received a 999 call at just after 6.30pm from a group of people who had spotted a “person stuck in the mud up to their waist along the Huntspill River”.
The Burnham Coastguard team met the first informants near the bridge that runs over the river on the A38 before gathering details of where the person had been last seen.
“We changed our location to the sluice gates and proceeded with an immediate search of the area,” said a Coastguard spokesman.
“The Police had also arrived on scene to join us in our localised search. Two teams in lifejackets and carrying throw lines followed the river in both directions along the footpath but it soon became apparent that there was no one around.”
“If they were there, they had managed to self extract and make their way to another location.”
“The first informants did the right thing in dialling 999 if there was someone there, one thing to remember is that if you do report someone in danger or difficulty then as long as you are in a safe position, stay where you can see them so we can quickly initiate a rescue if needed “
