Almost £6,000 has been raised for Cure Leukaemia by members of Brean Golf Club.
At the club’s annual presentation night, held in The Tavern at Brean Leisure Park, Club Captain David Porter handed over a bumper cheque the club members had raised for their charity for the year.
Former club member Richard Griffiths, who is now based in the West Midlands, accepted the cheque on Cure Leukaemia’s behalf and explained how the funds would help them in the battle against the blood cancer.
Richard’s son Tom contracted the disease when he was just four years old but after three years of treatment he beat the disease. He was also present, along with his mother and father, to receive the cheque.
Director of Golf Andrew March was the MC for the evening and he announced the prize winners, plus a few surprise awards on the night.
The first of these was the Clubperson of the Year which was awarded jointly to cousins Dan and Tom Broom who completed five gruelling challenges last summer on their bikes and feet and with it raised almost £1,000 for the Captain’s charity.
Dan Reason was named the Most Improved Golfer after his significant handicap reduction during the calendar year on his way to winning a sizeable haul of trophies on the night.
The Golfer of the Year prize went to Matt Shaw for his amazing achievement of winning two different Club Championships during 2017. First he collected the prestigious honour at Weston Super Mare (where he is also a member) before a few weeks later adding his home Club Championship to it back at Brean.
As always the final presentations were to the Men’s and Ladies Club Champions. Both were first time winners of their respective events with Lyn Bird collecting the Ladies Championship along side Men’s Champion Shaw.
