Emergency crews called to ammonia leak at Highbridge factory

-

Part of Highbridge’s Isleport Industrial Estate was sealed off by emergency crews on Monday evening (June 29th) following a factory chemical leak.

Fire, police and ambulance crews were called to Bakkavor Desserts in Bolton Close to deal with a leak of ammonia.

Staff were evacuated from the premises and residents in the surrounding area were advised by police to shut their doors and windows as a precaution.

A fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the incident was “caused by a leak of ammonia from some pipework.”

Roads around the factory were closed for three hours, as pictured here, while emergency services were at the scene.

A spokeswoman from Bakkavor Desserts told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Bakkavor can confirm that on Monday there was an isolated incident involving an ammonia leak at its Bakkavor Desserts site in Highbridge.”

“To ensure employee safety the site was evacuated immediately and there was no imminent risk to employees or those in the nearby area.”

“The root cause of the leak has been identified and Bakkavor continues to work to best practice health, safety and environmental standards. As a responsible business we take our corporate and local community responsibilities seriously.”
