Burnham-On-Sea man died after working with asbestos

-

A Burnham-On-Sea man died after a lifetime of working with asbestos, an inquest heard this week.

Geoffrey Matthews, 72, of Golf Links Road, died last year after working with asbestos for a number of years, Coroner Michael Rose was told.

A postmortem report was read out at the hearing, held in Bridgwater, where it was confirmed that Mr Matthews’ medical cause of death was malignant mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos dust.

A letter written by Mr Matthews before he died was also read at the hearing in which he explained how he had worked for heating engineering companies, councils and the Ministry of Defence during the 1950s and 1960s. The coroner concluded that this would have contributed to his illness.

Mr Rose returned a verdict that Mr Matthews died on August 12th, 2009 of an industrial disease.
