A church congregation in Highbridge took part in a world record attempt on Sunday (December 16th) for the most people singing the same Christmas carols at the same time.
The current record was set last year when churches across the UK and abroad attracted a total of 18,114 carol singers to sing five classic carols in unison – beating the previous record of 14,100 set in 2009.
79 people at Highbridge’s Gospel Tabernacle Evangelical Church joined in Sunday’s record attempt when five carols were sung in churches up and down the country at 7pm for 15 minutes. They now have a wait before finding out if the record was broken.
The judges were Highbridge PCSO Sarah England and Highbridge County Councillor John Woodman. John told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a brilliant evening and it was really lovely to see the best of Highbridge coming out.”
Rev Kelton Black, pictured, pastor of the Gospel Tabernacle Church, added: “We were delighted with the turnout and thank everyone from our local community for taking part in what was a fun event.”
Premier Christian Radio co-ordinated the national attempt and played the five carols on the radio, enabling local churches to use the broadcast as their backing music for the nationwide record attempt.
The carols sung were Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away in Manger and Hark the Herald Angels Sing.
