Burnham-On-Sea traders attack planned town centre parking changes

-

Several traders have this week blasted council plans to introduce a daytime lorry ban and one hour maximum parking restriction in Burnham-On-Sea town centre as “madness”.

Debbie Boardman from Rosemary’s Florist in Regent Street says proposals to introduce the new restrictions in the town centre, as first reported here by Burnham-On-Sea.com, would hurt traders in the town centre.

“The new idea that the council have in mind is absolute madness. They first proposed this idea over ten years ago and the town shops fought it,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“If they get away with it this time, it will be the end of Burnham as a town that is already struggling.”

She added that many traders in Burnham are already suffering from the recent introduction of new traffic wardens.

“We know that a lot of businesses and dwellings are suffering in Burnham – we have had three tickets now.”

“We have contacted the council regarding allowing us a permit for parking on the road, but they are not issuing them.”

She added: “We need our van near to the shop for deliveries, but we currently have to keep an eye out and move the van every hour which obviously is a nightmare as we are busily preparing flowers throughout the day.”

“The seafront is packed solid with workers from the town, so it just leaves the side streets to park in.”

Burnham’s Town Improvements Committee is currently considering a number of proposals to try and boost trade in the town centre using £320,000 of community funding from Tesco to offset its recent expansion. Among the proposals under consideration is a daytime lorry ban and one-hour parking.
