Highbridge’s King Alfred School has defended its decision to shut the school on Monday (March 19th) after snowfall left it short of staff.
“The school had to shut to pupils on Monday due to over 15 teaching staff and further support staff not being able to make the journey to work,” spokesperson Shane Dean said.
“Staff commute from a wide area – from the north of Bristol down to south of Exeter and across the Mendips and Quantocks. As such, many staff were snowed in.”
“This did not become clear until around 8am when they were on their journey and unable to get to the school. We will be fully open on Tuesday.”
But one parent said on social media: “I sent the boy off to King Alfred School at 8am so he could get there on time, worrying about him getting there safely, only to get a text at 8.07am saying the school is shut. He has no phone. We have no transport. We need earlier notifications! It’s not fair!”
