Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council has launched a safety campaign to prevent dog owners leaving their pets in cars during hot weather.
The council has installed new warning signs in car parks across the towns to raise awareness of the danger.
“After recent news stories about dogs being left in cars during the warm weather the signs are a quick way for the Town Council to remind people of the risks, and provide advice on who to call,” Town Centre Manager Bev Milner Simonds told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Burnham welcomes lots of dog owners every day who come to enjoy our great beaches, parks and dog friendly cafes and shops.”
“I know that there has been much debate about irresponsible dog owners using the wrong beaches at the wrong times and not cleaning up after their pets, but many do abide by the rules and know and love Burnham-On-Sea as a dog-friendly town.”
She added: “Leaving a pet in a car on hot days can be distressing, harmful and dangerous for a dog – the Town Council wants people to come and enjoy the town, but not feel they have to keep their pet in their cars after their walk as many places, including the Pavillon, the Somerset & Dorset, Take Two cafe and Victoria Hotel are dog-friendly.”
The council thanked Cllr Kate Lawson, Naked Signs and Avon and Somerset Police for their advice and help.
