Highbridge’s Mayor has expressed his “grave disappointment” at the Post Office’s decision by to shut Highbridge Post Office at the end of April.
The Post Office in Church Street had initially been due to close last October but, as we reported here last year, the Postmaster agreed to stay on for six months to allow time for a new operator to be found.
However, the Post Office said on Wednesday (March 28th) that no new operator has been found and therefore the premises will be closing.
Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Post Office spokeswoman Sheila Tapster said: “The postmaster for Highbridge has resigned and the premises, which we do not own, is to close on Wednesday 25th April.”
“We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services, and we are committed to maintaining a Post Office in Highbridge.”
“The vacancy is currently advertised on our website here and we have been visiting local retailers to highlight this new opportunity to them. We are working hard to restore Post Offices services.”
Cllr Bill Hancock, Mayor of Burnham-On-Sea & Highbridge Town Council, expressed his “grave disappointment” at the news.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s a lifeline in our town for hundreds of local residents and businesses.”
“It’s also a real social focal point and we can’t afford to lose such an important community facility.”
“We hope and pray that a manager comes forward quickly or that the Post Office finds another home here in Highbridge.”
Meanwhile, alternative Post Offices in the area are at Burnham-On-Sea Post Office in 6 Victoria Street, Burnham-On-Sea, TA8 1AL, and Brent Knoll Post Office in Brent Street, Brent Knoll, TA9 4DT.
