Crowds turn out for traditional wassailing ceremony near Burnham-On-Sea

-

Hundreds of people braved heavy rain and freezing temperatures to watch the centuries-old tradition of Somerset wassailing near Burnham-On-Sea last night (Saturday).

The traditional ceremony at Rich’s Cider Farm in Watchfield saw good health wished on apple crops for the coming year.

Wassailing Queen Molly Scott, 13, was carried aloft on a specially-made chair to a nearby orchard where a piece of cider-soaked toast was hung from the trees to ward off evil spirits.

The evening, organised by Burnham Rotary Club, also included entertainment from The Mangled Wurzels and Bob Darch, plus cider with proceeds going to charity.

One of the organisers, Russell Salway, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was one of the wettest events for several years but the ceremony still was able to go ahead as planned and we had a good turnout.”

Burnham Rotary Club President Hugh Mackay added: “We are grateful to Rich’s Cider for hosting our annual wassailing evening, which was raising moiney for Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance this year.”
