Town councillors have this week raised formal objections over a scheme to build eight new homes in Burnham-On-Sea.
The applicant has applied for Outline Planning Permission to build eight new homes on land to the east of 150 Berrow Road.
But at a meeting of the Town Council’s Planning Applications Committee last night (Wednesday), a number of concerns about road safety were raised.
Cllr Martin Cox said: “I’m concerned about the safety of Berrow Road. It appears that the road would be narrowed which, given how busy it already is, does not sound sensible. This needs more investigation.”
Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton added: “I am strongly objecting for several reasons – the development would create traffic congestion in Berrow Road, the access road is not wide enough, and the site is prone to flooding.”
Cllr Andy Brewer agreed: “It appears to be over-development and the access onto Berrow Road is a real concern for me.”
But Cllr Bill Hancock, who voted in favour of the plans, said: “This is infill, not a new development, and if the road access is right I have no problems with this application. Narowing the road could actually be good in helping with traffic calming.”
Public consultation on the application – reference number 11/15/00077 – is now open and continues until August 25th when Sedgemoor District Council will make a final decision soon afterwards.
