Offenders who have been sentenced by the courts to do unpaid community work have been collecting rubbish along Burnham’s seafront and along the River Brue this week.
Sedgemoor District Council asked the probation service if they could bring a team of offenders to help out after recent storms washed up a large amount of rubbish.
Dan Searle, supervisor for the Community Payback team of the Probation Service, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have spent all day collecting about 40 dustbin bags full of plastic bottle and bags from this beautiful footpath.”
“It’s excellent work for the guys to clear up the rubbish that has been washed up by the sea.”
The response from the public was fantastic and they engaged with the workers telling them what excellent work they are doing and how much better the area looks now.
Several old car wheels and gas bottles that had been dumped there were also taken away.
