80 swimmers ready for Burnham’s Stert Island Swim on Sunday

Eighty swimmers will dash into the sea to compete in Burnham-On-Sea’s annual Stert Island Swim this Sunday (August 9th).

The unique 2,400m sea race will begin at 2.30pm next to the town’s jetty as part of Burnham’s annual seafront Rescue Services Day when scores of demonstrations and displays will be held.

The participants in the swim from Burnham to Stert Island and back, watched by crowds of spectators along The Esplanade.

Organiser Celia Miall from West Country Triathletes, which oversees the event, told Burnham-On-Sea.com there has been lots of interest in the event again this year.

“Everything is in place for another great event. We’ve had lots of interest from swimmers and the race is now full and we are not taking any entries on the day.”

The event is being held in memory of a regular swimmer, Martin Lee, who has sadly passed away since last year’s event. Martin came third in the race last year and is pictured here on the left.

The annual swim is run by West Country Triathletes and supported by the RNLI, BARB, the Town Council, English Nature, Taunton Canoe Club and St John Ambulance.

West Country Tri-Athletes took over the organisation of the annual summer event in February 2008 after Sedgemoor District Council said it could no longer afford to run it.
