Burnham-On-Sea animal rescuers have saved a deer after it became trapped in garden wire and netting.
Secret World Wildlife Rescue in East Huntspill was called to help the deer after it was found trapped in a garden in Glastonbury by a member of the public.
After accidentally getting its antlers caught in the wire and netting, the deer was unable to release itself on its own.
Secret World’s team of volunteer response drivers were called and they secured the buck to the ground, removed the netting and wire, and then assessed the animal for injuries.
Thankfully, the deer was unharmed and Secret World’s staff released the animal back into the wild immediately.
These photos show the deer being rescued at the back of the Glastonbury garden this week.
Paul Kite, who is one of the volunteers, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s always a good feeling to rescue animals in need of help and it’s an even better feeling to be able to release them straight away.”
“As a response driver, I’ve rescued many animals over the years. It’s always a thrill to see animals up close and being in the position to give them a second chance.”
Secret World is inviting members of the public and supporters to a volunteer training day on Saturday, April 21st, not the 14th as originally planned. The free training day is being held at their centre in East Huntspill from 10.30am to 12.30pm for volunteer response drivers. This will cover how to rescue and transport sick animals across the region.
The charity will also hold a session on how to rear orphans from 1.30pm to 3pm the same day. For those wanting to attend both sessions, prospective volunteers are asked to bring a packed lunch.
To register for either sessions, please contact Secret World on 01278 783250 or email info@secretworld.org
