Tributes paid to Burnham Sailing Club Commodore who has died

Tributes have this week been paid to Ken Sowden, the commodore of Burnham-On-Sea sailing club, who has sadly passed away.

Ken, 73, lost his battle with cancer on 11th August.

David Humphrey, President of Burnham Sailing Club, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “As a previous dinghy instructor and keen yachtsman, he brought his enthusiasm and passion for sailing to the sailing club.”

“He loved to participate in sailing races and club cruises whenever he could. After the race he would be found in the bar with his glass of red wine discussing sailing tactics. He loved to socialise with both his family, friends and club members.”

“As Commodore and Sailing Master he worked tirelessly to encourage more people to get on the water. More recently he proposed the setting up of a local Gig Club. This is something which we hope to bring to fruition in the near future and this will be his legacy to us all.”

“A strong family man, colleague, and friend. Whilst he has passed on he will not be forgotten by members of the sailing club. Our thoughts and prayers go to Annette, and all the family at this difficult time.”

Graham Wills, former vice commodore and the current treasurer of the Sailing Club, added: “Ken brought a wealth of sailing knowledge and expertise to the club, based on his extensive sailing career, both in the UK and from his time spent abroad.”

“He was very keen to encourage new members onto the local waters here in Bridgwater Bay and actively promoted the club’s racing programme.”

“He was always keen to continue to develop sailing skills for club members and indeed himself, which included a single-handed trip to Ireland just a few years ago. His input into club management and his leadership skills have had a significant contribution in the development of the local sailing club – and I know that his influence will be dearly missed.”

Ken was previously a school teacher both in Africa and later locally at The Wells School. On retiring he and wife Annette set up their own guesthouse overlooking Wells Cathedral. Later Ken they moved to Burnham.

Ken’s funeral will be held on 28th August at Sedgemoor Crematorium, to be followed by a wake at Burnham-On-Sea Motorboat & Sailing club.
