Over thirty teams took part in the annual Charity Pro-Am Golf Tournament at Brean Golf Club on Tuesday (May 11th).
A total of 33 teams, which is believed to be a record number, took to the greens on a dry, cold day as they attempted to avoid the many hazards that lay in wait on the course’s new layout.
The team representing Jones Bros were declared the winners of the tournament for the second successive year after heading home a large field.
Each three player team was accompanied by either a celebrity, a local golf professional or a National Hunt jockey or trainer and the aim of the day was to raise money for three charities – the Injured Jockey’s Fund, St Margaret’s Hospice and The Alzheimers Society.
Playing alongside the National Hunt Jockey Nathan Horrocks were Brean members Dave and Eric Jones and Wayne Barrett, who set a blistering pace with an excellent score of 85 points.
This figure stood well clear of the challengers for much of the day and only came under threat as some of the later starters returned to the clubhouse.
The team that came closest to beating them was representing Burnham-On-Sea’s Watermark Financial Services, led by Mark Woods.
His team of fellow Burnham and Berrow members, comprising Robin Griffiths, Richard Turner and Richard Catton, fell just one point short as they were left to rue a poor final hole which cost them the chance of victory.
Like the winners, they also matched their finishing position of 2009 and will surely be back to try to go one better next year and stop Jones Bros completing their hat trick.
Brean Golf Club’s teams took the next two spots in the prizes.
Club Captain Steve Bateman led Steve Mason, Mike Carter and Tony Groves to third spot after their storming back nine holes edged out the Brean Seniors team after they had both accumulated 82 points.
Seniors team captain Dai Wood was joined by Tony Anderson, Peter Douglas and Barrie Yearsley and they gave a good account of themselves to secure fourth spot.
Rounding out the prizewinners in fifth place was the David Haines led Burnham Golf Range team, made up of Mike Porter and regular range users Brian Warner and Chris Payne, who put their practice to good effect to score 81 points.
Butterworth Jones’ ladies team were the top female team with a score of 74 and comprised of Beryl Robert, Joan Jenkinson, Sue Mardell and Jan Bishop.
“At the presentation the winners received their spoils and were then entertained by comedian Ian ‘Sludge’ Lees unique brand of humour which rounded off a successful and enjoyable day for all,” Andrew March, the Brean club’s PGA professional player, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Thanks go to Deidre Wheadon for her sterling efforts in putting the large field together and to the House family and their staff at the Leisure Park for looking after the competitors so well on the day.”
“A mention must also be made to Head Greenkeeper Robin Williams and his staff who, after a difficult winter, and now an extended dry cold spell, presented the course in splendid condition for all the participants to enjoy.”
